What is Britpop ?

Britpop was more than just a genre of music in the mid to late 1990’s; it was a cultural phenomenon that swept across the United Kingdom and in turn the whole of the world. It encapsulated the spirit of a generation, celebrating British identity, style, and attitude through infectious lyrics about every day live and people, catchy melodies, anthemic choruses, and irresistible guitar riffs. What is Britpop?

Taking inspiration from 1960’s British Invasion bands such as The Kinks and The Who, 1970’s Glam and Punk artists such as David Bowie, Slade, T-Rex and the Sex Pistols and 1980’s bands like Duran Duran artists such as Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Supergrass and more wrote songs about being typically British and the eccentricities of British people. Damon Albarn, Liam and Noel Gallagher, Brett Anderson, Gaz Coombes and Jarvis Cocker were the main singers and song writers in what started out life as just “Indie” music that then became a movement known as Britpop. The first few singles released to be considered Britpop were The Drowners by Suede and Popscene by Blur in 1992.
